I just learned from watching Michael Pollan’s “The Botany Of Desire” that in certain parts of America, white settlers were compelled by law to plant apple trees on arrival.

Imagine if we required every land owner in the United States to plant and maintain one fruit tree for every 1/8 acre of land. I bet the earth would be a better (and tastier) place for it.

The aftermath of a controlled burn of a section of the native prairie restoration at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.

Up to 99 percent of America’s original prairie lands are now gone. It sure would be swell to do everything we can to preserve that remaining one percent, and who knows, maybe even improve on it down the road?

I thought http://www.prairies.org/ was a good place to start if you want to learn more or help out.
