Bearing Wall Gone

Architecture as Process

Architecture as Process
We never tire of the wonderful process of architecture. From the early stages of research and discovery, into design exploration and detailing, then throughout the construction phase, we love every step and each new challenge along the way.

Bearing Wall Gone

Bearing Wall Gone

Two bedrooms become one, and what was a bearing wall is now a W6x16 steel beam. The W stands for wide flange (the steel shape being used) the 6 describes a nominal depth of the beam in inches, while the 16 denotes the number of pounds the beam weighs, per linear foot. Built to last.

Framing

Framing

Framing is almost finished at this St Paul remodel. The floor joists have been cut down and reinforced in the shower area, eliminating the need for any curb, and creating the fully accessible space my clients had hoped for.

Post In Place

Post In Place

This turned newel post I specified went in! The carpenter was able to anchor it deep into the floor framing, before the new hardwood was installed this week. Graceful but sturdy. Built to last.

Cozy Cove

Cozy Cove

This cozy new niche opens up to the master bedroom and will make a great place for a comfortable arm chair and small desk. The plaster coves echo a motif found elsewhere in the home.

Blueprints for Success

Blueprints for Success

Getting started this weekend on designs for reworking the second floor of this 1950 St. Anthony cottage. It’s a real treat when the clients have the original blueprints for the house.

Unsealed Ipe

Unsealed Ipe

Unsealed, Ipe deck boards turn this soft, driftwood grey in time. Very happy with the way it looks next to the stainless steel and aluminum elements, 14 years after I did it. Wish I could age that gracefully.

Good Partners

Good Partners

I love it when guys in the field send me photos of the work as they’re laying it out, to make sure it’s coming together the way I planned. Working with people who know what questions to ask, and when to ask them, makes all the difference in the world.

Perfect Patina

Perfect Patina

Always fun to come back and visit this project I did a few years ago. We did all the hardware in what is sometimes referred to as “living brass.” No protective coating allows the metal to develop a beautiful patina over time.

Steel Beam for the Win

Steel Beam for the Win

Always exciting to see what a new steel beam can do for an old house. This design move opened up a nice, clear family room space, while resolving some substantial structural defects in the home.

Peak at the Trees

Peak at the Trees

A well placed skylight can make an enormous difference in any space, but particularly a small one, like this new bathing area. The daylight will be shared with the adjoining spaces by vaulting the ceiling and using transom windows over the doors. Love that direct connection to the trees outside.
